Famous Piano Players Throughout History

Looking for some inspiration when it comes to playing pianos? You’ll find it when you hear more about these famous pianists. There are plenty of well-known piano players in both modern and alternative music today. There’s so many to choose from so we’ve chosen our favourites from all over the world that cover a variety of genres!

Ludwig van Beethoven (Germany, 1770-1827)

Ludwig van Beethoven was one of the earliest and most well-known piano players. The immensely talented composer was well known as a piano virtuoso. His piano playing style was incredibly accurate and powerful.

Frederic Chopin (Poland, 1810-1849)

Chopin pieces are often used as pieces when learning to master the piano. He was reserved and calm and this reflected in playing which was often soft, simple and delicate. While his playing wasn’t intense, he gave it a lightness and profoundness that made him a delight to the ears.

Vladimir Horowitz (Russia/America, 1903-1989)

Vladimir was an epic Russian piano player whose adaptations and performances left people amazed. He was an exceptionally dynamic and fast pianist who enjoyed altering scores of other composers’ pieces to make them more suitable for the piano.

David Helfgott (Australia, Born 1947)

David Helfglott is one of Australia’s most renowned concert pianists. The academy award winning film, Shine was based on his Helgott’s life. David Helgott was considered a child prodigy and suffered mental illness throughout his best piano playing years.

Tori Amos (America, Born 1963)

Tori Amos is a famous pianist of modern times. She is both a talented pianist and composer. Tori Amos won a scholarship to the prestigious Peabody Institute at John Hopkins University when she was only five years old. She still holds the position of being the youngest person ever to be admitted to the school. Her piano style is considered versatile and flawless.

Sir Elton Hercules John (England, Born 1947)

Sir Elton John is an English singer, pianist and composer. He was part of bringing piano playing to the modern music world. In his career, he has sold more than 300 million records and is considered one of the best-selling music artists today.
