Some of the Most Beautiful Piano Music in History

Piano music can seemingly transcend dimensions, transporting you to a different time and place. Throughout history, there have been some exquisitely beautiful piano compositions created by some of the world’s most prominent musicians.

Read on to see a review of some our favourite and most timeless piano music throughout history.

The Top Five

We have compiled here for you a list of ten timeless piano music pieces from different historical eras.  These pieces will never go out of style and we hope they will inspire you with your piano playing. Put them on your music list if you haven’t already done so!

  1. Frederic Chopin Scherzo No. 2 Op. 31 (1839)

This has to be probably one of the most famous piano pieces of all time and has been played by the great music masters of the world.  Chopin the Polish composer was a great lover of the piano and composed a lot of his music on it. The Scherzo is a most beautiful exploration of the range of the piano, with almost every key used at some point. It consists of long flowing passages, running from one end of the piano to the other.

  1. Franz Liszt Piano Sonata in B. Minor (1853)

Liszt was a Romantic composer who is well known and loved the world over, especially amongst Romance enthusiasts. This piece remains his only piano sonata, and lasts for more than half an hour. In this time, you will experience a range of emotions from happiness to excitement and even some sadness.  It’s both a physically and mentally demanding piece to play for a full half hour. The emotion required for it is immense. It is full of colour and musical poetry, evoking emotions like passion and happiness, and of course, sorrow too.

  1. Dmitri Shostakovich Piano Concerto No. 2 Mut III (1957)

Shostakovich is one of the great composers of the 20th century. This piece is famous with orchestras all over the world as it complements the orchestra really well. Every note is played precisely the way Shostakovich wanted. This piece was originally written for Shostakovich’s son, as a birthday present from Shostakovich. If you’re thinking of doing the same for your son or daughter, make sure you invest in a good quality piano; whether it’s a second hand piano or a brand new one.

  1. Movie – ‘Picnic at Hanging Rock’ Piano Theme (1975)

This very famous Australian movie based on the novel of the same name put Australian film-making on the map back in 1975.  It’s the story of a group of Australian schoolgirls from an elite girl’s school who embark on a Valentine’s Day excursion to Hanging Rock (an unusual geological formation in Victoria).  Four girls vanish into thin air never to be found. The piano music from the film evokes a real eerie, nostalgic feel of a bygone era (1900).  Gather some of your female friends around as you play this one on your piano.

  1. Movie – ‘Jurassic Park’ (1993)

Millions all over the world know John Williams’ famous piano score from Jurassic Park (the original version). In fact, it’s fair to say the movie would not be complete without it. It takes you on an amazing climax from start to finish, evoking all sorts of emotions.
