Top Tips For Choosing a Piano

As with any other large purchase, buying a piano requires careful thought and preparation. It helps to know what to look out for and what will suit your needs best so you can enjoy a love of your piano for many years to come!

Here’s exactly what you should consider when choosing a piano to suit your needs.

Who is it for?

Our first question to consider when purchasing a piano is who will be the main person using it? Will the piano be for a beginner, an intermediate or a professional player? Are you purchasing the piano as a gift? All these factors affect the choice you will make.

Beginner

Someone, maybe you or your child, has just started to play the piano. Instead of automatically buying a large professional piano, consider purchasing a beginner piano or keyboard and then upgrading as their skills progress.

A Gift

Before purchasing the piano, do a bit of careful research as to what the recipient will like. Would they prefer a grand or an upright piano? Do they have any special needs or wants?

If possible, visit a piano store with them to get a better understanding of what will suit them.

Research

Before going into the store, do some research and have a list compiled of some of your favourite brands you would love to try in store.

Size

Naturally, the size of the piano you will purchase will depend on how much space you have. Upright pianos are generally smaller but taller than grand pianos, which makes them perfect for a smaller room.

Another factor to consider is the permanence of where you are. Are you a frequent mover? If you are, perhaps a smaller piano would suit you better, considering moving costs for grand pianos can quickly add up.

Budget

Another top tip: establish a budget and stick to it. Grand pianos can cost anywhere from $10 000 to $50 000, whereas upright pianos often range from $5000 to $15 000.

Remember to also factor in extra costs on top of that, such as delivery, tuning and possibly repair work.

If all these costs feel overwhelming, remember that you can also purchase a pre-loved piano, which in many cases can be cheaper than a brand new piano and still give you top quality sound.

Dealer

Before purchasing your perfect piano, take a moment to consider who your dealer is. The dealer is just as important as the actual piano being purchased and requires just as much preparation to choose.

When looking at dealers, here are some questions to take into account:

Are They Reputable?

A good reputation means you can trust that they will deliver a good piano. You can check their reputation by reading testimonials, and seeing what other people think of them. We at The Pianoforte understand the importance of testimonials, which is why we have them available to read on our website.

Warranty and Returns

A good dealer will have a strong warranty covering their products, which is vital in case the piano requires repairs.

It is also good to ask them about their return policy, just in case you encounter a situation that will require you to return the piano. Anything can happen in life, and it’s good to be prepared.

Questions?

Buying a piano can feel overwhelming at times, but with the right help, it shouldn’t be.
